Best universities in the Czech Republic

A Czech economic newspaper made a yearly ranking of universities in eight fields of study. If you want to know which university and faculty is the most prestigious, read on.

number-one-844752-m_sxc.jpgHospodářské noviny (Czech economic newspaper) made a yearly ranking of universities in eight, according to their opinion, prestigious fields of study.  The rankings are published every year in January, right in time before the deadlines for application at most universities. We'll let you know as soon as there will be a more up-to-date comparison, but we thought this might be interesting nevertheless.

The fields of study Hospodářské noviny compared in 2013 are following: law, psychology, informatics, sociology, mechanical engineering, economics, architecture and medicine. In 2012, chemistry was also one of the assessed fields.

In general, the points were received for worldwide reputation, interest about university and science. Faculties that do surveys among students earned an extra point.

The criteria that Hospodářské noviny use to compare the universities include for instance the chance of being accepted to study at the faculty, the rate of students who sign up for the studies after succesfully passing the entrance exams, the rate of students that go abroad to study for at least one semester, how many students are sent abroad for internships, or the scientific research conducted at the faculty. The ranking doesn't compare for example the quality of lectures.

Before we get to the actual ranking, there is something we would like to point out and we would like you to keep in mind. It is entirely up to you to make the decision about at which university you will study. This research is not official (meaning that it wasn't put together by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports or any other official authority). The fact that a faculty came out as the best one in a newspaper's ranking doesn't necessarily mean it is the best choice for you or that the criteria that have been used are the ones that matter to you. If you remember, we said that the quality of the lectures isn't compared. The ranking is therefore more about the prestige rather than the quality of education provided. It doesn't mean that the other universities aren't good, on the contrary – the competition is tough! To ensure high quality of education, all faculties and their respective fields of study undergo an official process of educational accreditation conducted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The accreditaion has to be renewed at regular intervals.
